On this Sunday of the Last Judgment, the Very Rev. Archpriest Andrew Stephen Damick visited Holy Trinity + Holy Cross and gave a sermon on what the Last Judgment means.
Many imagine a scary courtroom when they think of the last judgment. However, Fr. Andrew points out that the last judgment is about putting things right, putting things in order. This will be a pleasant experience for some and an unpleasant experience for others. Everything that we’ve done will be laid bare before God and humanity. The good that we’ve done will become permanent in the Kingdom of Heaven, and the evil that we’ve done will be burned away. Fr. Andrew explains that all the good we do in this life matters, because it builds the Kingdom of Heaven here and now. In addition, this Sunday's Gospel reading shows us that the good we do to others, we do to Christ, and the good we fail to do, we fail to do to him. Fr. Andrew encourages us that as we embark on the upcoming Lenten journey, we focus on building the Kingdom of Heaven by taking the opportunities Christ puts in front of us to do good, fulfilling our calling to be his hands and feet in this world.
