This week my guest is Charlotte Morley, Program Director for Harlem Lacrosse, at the Promise Academy 2. Harlem Lacrosse’s mission is to empower children at risk for academic decline and dropout to rise above their challenges and reach their full potential.
Harlem Lacrosse provides school-based, full-day, year-round support by placing a full-time staff member at school sites. Their Program Directors maintain a constant presence in the lives of the students as tutors, mentors, and coaches who provide individualized attention. Their programming empowers students to set high expectations for themselves, achieve their goals and break the cycle of poverty by providing daily study halls, mentoring, push-in academic support, experiential & service-learning, and character-building lacrosse instruction.
Lacrosse is at the heart of a “college-going culture” and holistic approach to developing the social emotional skill sets of children. Lacrosse’s team culture, perseverance, grit, and confidence translates directly into the classroom and students’ personal lives. Harlem Lacrosse now serves over 850 students nationwide across nineteen programs in five cities (NYC, Boston, Baltimore, Los Angeles & Philadelphia).
Harlem Lacrosse students have maintained a 100% on-time middle school graduation rate, have passed their classes at a rate 20% higher than their peers at school sites, and have earned over $15 million scholarship offers to independent schools and colleges, including: Bates College, Colby College, Connecticut College, Gettysburg College, Haverford College, Hobart College, Tufts University, the University of Virginia, and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
