In 2007, Americans underwent 11.7 million cosmetic surgeries—a staggering reminder of our obsession with appearances. But when Samuel went looking for Israel’s next king, God reminded him that while people look at the outward appearance, the Lord looks at the heart. And that’s a sobering thought, because God sees every sinful, selfish desire that hides there.
