Hegar, an Air Force combat veteran, is the Democratic challenger against U.S. Rep. John Carter, R-Round Rock, in Texas’ 31st Congressional District. Hegar’s campaign reported raising $1.1 million in the second fundraising quarter of the year with over $750,000 coming in the 10 days after the release of her viral video “Doors,” which has been viewed more than 2.5 million times. Hegar served three tours in Afghanistan as a search-and-rescue pilot. On July 29, 2009, while on a medevac mission, Hegar's helicopter was shot down during a conflict with the Taliban and she was wounded by shrapnel in her arm and leg. She received the Purple Heart as well as the Distinguished Flying Cross with Valor Device.
