As chancellor of the Texas A&M University System, Sharp serves as chief executive officer under the direction of the board of regents. A graduate of Texas A&M University, he was elected to the Texas House in 1978. He went on to win a seat in the Texas Senate in 1982, where he served on the powerful Senate Finance Committee, and he was elected to the Railroad Commission of Texas in 1986. Sharp was elected state comptroller in 1990 and re-elected in 1994.
