HEALTHY LIFESTYLE with Host Lori Anne Casdia with Guest Rhea Manjrekar, Royal International Miss. A senior at Stony Brook University studying Computer Engineering in the Women in Science and Engineering Honors Program Rhea hopes to pursue a career in Healthcare IT once She graduates. She started a non-profit organization called Children’s Hope India 3 where they help homeless and underprivileged children in New York and in India. At Stony Brook University, Rhea is on the executive board of a service-learning organization called Alternative Spring Break Outreach (ASBO.) Besides their annual week-long spring break outreach trips where they travel across the country and work with a local organization to do relief work, they also have local volunteering trips throughout the year. Through this, she helps students build leadership skills and understand the economic disparity. Recently Rhea won the title of Royal International Miss and plan on using this as a platform to promote her service work, the gender gap in STEM, and women empowerment.

QUOTES:

"Being a role model for young girls is my favorite part of being Royal International Miss. I have a huge platform being an international titleholder, and it is my duty to set a good example for young girls of what a strong woman looks like".

"Malala Yousafzai has been my role model for a very long time. She risked her life to stand up for what she believes in and that is a passion and strength I admire so much. Malala fought for equal access to education for both boys and girls, and minorities in general. Equal access to education is something my charity focuses on a lot, and something I value personally. Malala is an amazing example of a strong young woman fighting for what she believes in, and her determination and perseverance inspire me every day".

"The fact that I am a minority woman in the engineering field is unique in itself! Only about 11% of engineers are women and the percentage of minority females in the field is even less than that. My goal is to break the glass ceiling in this field, specifically in the technology and computer engineering fields. Half of the population is female but 1/10 of engineers, the people who build things for people, are female. Therefore, I stand out because my opinion is valuable as I represent half of the human population! Additionally, having faced and overcome adversity in this field has taught me the importance of standing up for yourself and for others".
