Gonna take you back to 1972. Curtis Mayfield Super Fly. It was released as the soundtrack for the blaxploitation film of the same name. Widely considered a classic of 1970s soul and funk music, Super Fly was a nearly immediate hit. Its sales were bolstered by two million-selling singles, "Freddie's Dead" (number 2 R&B charts, number 4 Pop charts) and the title track (number 5 R&B, number 8 Pop). Super Fly is one of the few soundtracks to out-gross the film it accompanied.

Curtis Mayfield’s Super Fly was released in the year 1972. That’s when Richard Nixon was president of the U.S. 1972 was the year when the Los Angeles Lakers won the 1972 NBA finals. 1972 was an interesting year with notable events. I was just a baby.

It’s the title of the song that gets my attention and hearing the chorus. When I think of Super Fly, I think of soul. I like the song as a song. I didn’t watch the movie Super Fly growing up, and the song had a huge role in the film. It was the second single released from the album and reached #8 on the billboard Hot 100 and #5 on the Best Soul Singles Chart. The lyrics celebrate the craftiness and determination of the film’s main character. The song plays over the film’s closing credits.
