Widely considered a classic of 1970s soul and funk music, Super Fly was a nearly immediate hit. Its sales were bolstered by two million-selling singles, "Freddie's Dead" (number 2 R&B charts, number 4 Pop charts) and the title track (number 5 R&B, number 8 Pop). Super Fly is one of the few soundtracks to out-gross the film it accompanied.

It’s the title of the song that gets my attention and hearing the chorus. When I think of Super Fly, I think of soul. I like the song as a song. I didn’t watch the movie Super Fly growing up, and the song had a huge role in the film. It was the second single released from the album and reached #8 on the billboard Hot 100 and #5 on the Best Soul Singles Chart.The lyrics celebrate the craftiness and determination of the film’s main character. The song plays over the film’s closing credits.
