"'Be completely humble and gentle... bearing with one another in love.'" Welcome to the Moms for Christ Podcast. This is Serrita. Recently, I learned about a term called ‘gently’. It's when wild horses are trained to not react to the environment around them, instead they learn to trust and focus on their handler. The horses are transformed from their rigidness and wild personna of reacting with aggression. Instead, they become more controlled in behavior and sensitive to the needs and demands of their owner. From there, each horse with different talents can grow into their full potential. In Ephesians 4 verse 1 to 2 it says, “As a prisoner for the Lord, then I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” This scripture has truly impacted me because as Paul is writing from jail, it's clear that all he does and has been able to accomplish is because he loves the Lord and follows the direction of the Lord. These verses are the first and second commandment in action; ‘to love our God with all our heart ,mind, soul, and strength’ and then ‘to love our neighbor’.
What strikes me is Paul telling us to live a life worthy of our call as Christ followers and to be gentle. I think of my daughters; if they don't hear me or answer me when I'm initially calling their names I couldn't expect them to listen and do what I intend for them to do next. They have to be sensitive and responsive to my calling them. They have to have a sense of humility. For my 4 year olds, breaking away from what they're already doing - like playing their favorite game - that can be challenging for them. It's the nature of wanting only what they want. When my children are willing and open to receive what I have to tell them they show gentleness toward me and responsiveness toward my guidance.
"The Lord's will for us to have a heart humble and gentle toward Him." Here I'm thinking of God's willingness to help us and be patient with us even though we can at times be hesitant to do something different. I see the Lord's will for us to have a heart humble and gentle toward Him. For us to be sensitive enough to hear and answer His call and have a heart gentle enough to serve each other because we're being led by Christ’s love in us. So with my young children I usually reward them with a compliment or something fun just for showing the right attitude and response to change. And in reality, it's training for the long road of truth being inconvenient to our natural emotions and ways of doing different things. But God's truth is always beneficial and priceless...
