When God cursed the serpent in the garden, He proclaimed that their would be enmity between the Seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent. The result is a prolonged war between these two seeds. The story of Cain and Abel gives us a glimpse of these two seeds and what was to come in the following generations. Satan is always waiting to devour the seed, but the Seed, Christ, has already crushed the serpent's head, it is up to the church, the body of Christ, to enforce that victory of the Cross.
