Edward Kennedy Ellington, better known as 'Duke' was one of the great musical institutions of the 20th century. This recording is unique as Duke cherry-picked his three most 'modern'soloists: Clark Terry on fluegelhorn,Paul Gonsalves on tenor saxophone and Jimmy Hamilton on clarinet and created a showcase for them by also employing three trombones to fill out the ensemble and play riffs and backgrounds. This is what sets this apart from a simple 'jam session' date. Ellington is on piano, Jimmy Woode is on bass and Sam Woodyard is on drums. The three trombonists from the band are,Quentin 'Butter' Jackson,Britt Woodman and John Sanders. Duke Ellington's Spacemen!
