Description

Should you be eating soy? This is a question I get asked a lot, especially by my clients who have ER+ breast cancer.

You may hear from your oncologist or others that you should avoid all soy products. Elevated hormone levels (i.e. estrogen) and excessive and prolonged exposure to hormones throughout a lifetime are risk factors for breast cancer.

The reason oncologists are telling you to avoid soy is because most think soy contains estrogens that are harmful and can cause the cancer to grow. I’m not trying to bad mouth oncologists, because I think they do wonderful work, but their focus is not on food and nutrition (they only get a few hours of study on nutrition in their educational career, unless they choose to dedicate more).

There has been newer, developing research that points to soy being a great thing to include in the diet, especially for postmenopausal women who have or have had breast cancer.  I only recommend whole, organic forms of soy like tempeh, tofu, edamame, and miso.

On today's episode of The Breast Life Podcast, I'll be going more in depth on this topic so that you can make the best decision for yourself.

As always, I'm here if you have questions or need clarification on something you were told or read.
