This week on Over The Farm Gate, we’re looking at upland farming and the plethora of roles producers operating across these iconic landscapes have. As DEFRA announces its new post-Brexit agricultural transition for England, the question at the forefront of most farmers minds is ‘Will upland farmers have the most to lose?’. Already facing the responsibility of balancing food production with crucial environmental work and serving as the bedrock of their communities, how much will the life of hill farmers change? To gain an insight, this week we are speaking to Thomas Binns, the Uplands Chairman for NFU, who also runs a Swaledales as part of a 2,500 breeding sheep enterprise and Rachel Lewis Davies, an upland farmer who farms beef and sheep on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Rachel and her team at NFU Cymru have been instrumental in a vital new piece of research looking into the contribution of the Welsh uplands and the sector’s hopes and fears for the future.LinksDEFRA path for sustainable farming - https://www.gov.uk/government/news/government-unveils-path-to-sustainable-farming-from-2021For more on Brexit, check out our podcast Ploughing Throught Brexit - https://link.chtbl.com/K1dOK__p NFU Hill Farming - https://www.nfuonline.com/sectors/hill-farming/Rachel Lewis Davies - https://www.nfu-cymru.org.uk/about-us/whos-who/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
