We used to think that greed and male-male competition explained how almost every civilization turned to big government and unnecessary war. But these incentives just did not explain the resulting hatred and intensity. It turns out that Freud and Jung explained an additional powerful weakness in humans that snowballs from the personal to the group, race, country, and political levels.
