Here's Some Advice You Might Not Wanna Follow. Welcome to April 18, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate great advice and a box full of fun. Today is National Columnists' Day, a day to recognize those whose prose enlightens us, humors us or just plain advises us. In honor of these scriveners, we present marriage advice handed down over the years. In the 1800’s Harriet Stowe advised women to “grin and accept their trials in marriage”. In 1907 the Herald and Review advised women not to marry a man who made less than $1200 per year in order to avoid “heartache and trouble”. In 1942 the Hartford Courant suggested that couples examine each other's handwriting to reveal things about their personality. These days the advice is certainly more forward thinking and on National Columnists' Day we celebrate taking some of it. When animal crackers were first made by the Stauffer Biscuit Company in 1871, they came in barrels and had very little detail. The fun shapes caught on in America, however, and were reimagined by the Nabisco Company in 1902. The red box with a string handle became known as Barnum’s Animals after the iconic circus showman. Originally, the box was made as a Christmas ornament and to this day they are made with a handle for hanging. Barnum’s Animals remain a fan favorite and perhaps that’s because the more than 37 different animals are stamped with impressive detail. On National Animal Crackers Day we celebrate this sweet box of nostalgia that still has a place in our hearts. I’m Anna Devere, and I’m Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day.
