Paul Castellano became boss of the Gambino Family in 1976 after Carlo Gambino died. Thinking that the family would benefit from Castellano's involvement in white collar crime, Gambino promoted Paul instead of underboss Aniello Dellacroce. This caused a rift in the family and in 1985 it all came to a head as John Gotti, a Dellacroce loyalist took his chance and eliminated Castellano to grab the reigns for himself.
