Tony Silva was born in the United States, but lived the first 6 years of his life in Mexico. When a couple that was close to his parents lost their twin boys, Tony’s parents loaned him to the couple. As it turns out that became a permanent situation. His birth and unofficial adopted families were migrants which made it difficult to reconnect. Like his birth family, his new family valued education because itwas a way to lift the entire family out of poverty. His education and his ability to lead othersmade a difference in the communities in which he lived. At 16 years of age, heexemplified potentially lifesaving leadership. Provisions including powderedmilk and rat poison were given to his immigrant community. The instructionswere in English, but most people in the community only spoke Spanish. Tony organized youth volunteers to relabel all of the product which reduced the riskof illness and/or death. That was the beginning of a lifelong career o foutstanding leadership.
