The story of Layla and Majnun is often described as the eastern Romeo and Juliet, with the story dating back to an anthology of poems by 12th-Century poet, Nizami, who lived in present-day Azerbaijan. This illustration (1 of 13 miniatures) presents Majnun, tenderly embracing Layla’s grave and crying out to Allah to reunite him with his beloved. In that moment he ceases to breathe. It is believed they are currently loving each other for eternity in Jannah (paradise).
