בסוף חודש אפריל נפתח מבצע יבוסי כדי לפתוח דרך לשכונות יהודיות בירושלים. שניים מהקרבות הקשים במלחמה, נבי סמואל וסן סימון התרחשו במסגרת המבצע. היו אלה קרבות קשים ביותר ומפקדי הכוחות נאלצו לקבל החלטות גורליות במהלך הקרבות.
