Author and Pastor Brian Zahnd walked a five-hundred-mile pilgrimage from France to Spain, examining crucifixes and meditating on what he saw. Five years later, he put pen to paper to discuss a kaleidoscopic view of the cross of Christ and what we miss in our modern-day understanding of Jesus's death, resurrection, and ascension

- Atonement: The reconciliation of God and humankind through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ
- Penal Substitutionary Atonement: The teaching that, on the cross, Jesus Christ received the punishment we deserve for our sins and gave his perfect righteousness to all who make a sincere profession of faith.
- Christus Victor: The teaching that the cross signifies the victory that Christ won over the world and the spiritual powers of darkness, thus winning salvation and eternal life for all who make a sincere profession of faith.
- Iconography: The study and interpretation of visual symbols or images in a work of art.
