Description

Children exposed to domestic violence frequently do not have the foundation of safety and security that is normally provided by the family. The children experience a desensitization to aggressive behavior, poor anger management, poor problem solving skills, and learn to engage in exploitative relationships. Damn that all sounds too familiar when it comes to me. That’s why I’m here. I have struggled for a long time in silence on many of these issues. It’s frustrating to know that I have something wrong with me because of the violence I was exposed to. I have no memory of being around the violence as a child yet I’m here holding the emotional baggage day after day. It’s through channels like this podcast, meditation, my therapist, psychiatrist and working out that keep me upright willing and ready for this ongoing journey. It’s scary to discover how the early years of trauma may have affected my brain? In many cases if children are exposed to prolonged or repeated traumatic experiences, such as child abuse and neglect, this can cause 'toxic' or 'harmful' stress, where they start to feel more stressed more often and for longer periods. This can disrupt the building of healthy brain architecture. I know you have many choices in the podcast world so thank you so much for being here with me today.
