In this excellent episode, Nancy and Jose are joined in the studio by Emily Moberly, the Founder, and CEO of Traveling Stories. Traveling Stories is a non-profit organization that aims to spread the passion for reading to children not only in San Diego but also all over the world.
Emily grew up loving books. Even before she could read, she always wanted to stay up later to keep reading. When Emily went to teach English in Honduras after she graduated college, she was shocked to learn that many other kids did not have this same positive association and passion for reading as they had really only read textbooks. This experience became the catalyst for the creation of Traveling Stories.
Since the pandemic, Traveling Stories has been pivoting its strategy. Where they used to have a more in-person focus with popup storytime at farmer's markets, they have now shifted to a more virtual approach where kids can meet weekly with reading mentors. They also have several new programs like their Walk for LIteracy and internship program to help bring the value of reading to all.
