In 1969, Jim Nabors, shortly after ending his hit show Gomer Pyle USMC (spun off from The Andy Griffith Show), was given his own variety series. The Jim Nabors Hour was a ratings hit in its own right but was canceled after two seasons, partly because of the major networks wanting to appeal to younger, more urban audiences.
