Huntington upended a talented Martinsburg following a sluggish first-half. Huntington won the 1988 state title game, 91-88. It marked the school's first state title victory since 1969.

The game featured four players first or second team all-state players, including future Mountaineer 1,000-point scorer Marsalis Basey.

The 91-88 final score became the second-highest scoring Class AAA state final game at the time. Both the Bulldogs and Highlanders combined for 179 points. The ‘88 final is now the third highest-scoring Class AAA final. The highest scoring state final in AAA remains the 1977 game between Logan and Washington Irving.

The late Jack Fleming provided the play-by-play.
