In 1976 the Canadian band Rush hadn't really found theri identity yet. In fact they were very much in danger of being dropped by their record label after the disappointing failure of their 3rd album Carress of Steel. The pressure was on then to create an album specifically designed to be commercially successful. What they created instead took everyone by surprise.
