Thomas Gilbert Jr. was born into extravagant wealth, and grew up in the Hamptons and on Manhattan's posh Upper East Side. He attended elite schools such as The Buckley School, Deerfield Academy and Princeton University. Once he graduated college, he took off for years to surf in exotic locations like Brazil, Hawaii and South America, and his parents footed the bill. When he returned to New York, he ran in high-end social circles, dated relatives of famous actors, and received a hefty weekly allowance from his parents, who also paid his rent in upscale apartments. During this time, Gilbert never had a real job. But underneath the surface of this devastatingly handsome, rich and powerful man was an individual who was tortured by extreme mental health issues and drug addiction, which no professional or loved one could seem to properly diagnose or treat. This led to an increasingly volatile relationship with friends, girlfriends, and, preeminently, with his father, Thomas Gilbert Sr., that ultimately resulted in his death, in one of the most infamous patricidal cases of our time.
