Description

Perhaps not surprisingly, The Great State of New Mexico has been home to a good number of cults over the years. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a cult as "a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object," and, as "a relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister." Well, two such New Mexico cults definitely fit the bill: They are: The Aggressive Christianity Missionary Training Corps and The Lord Our Righteousness Church. The Aggressive Christianity Missionary Training Corps started in California, then moved to Oregon before being sued by a former member to the tune of $1.2 million. This led the ACMTC to settle in New Mexico. Once there, the founders of the cult, Jim and Deborah Green would lead a reign of terror, abusing cult members and their children and making individuals do hard manual labor. Until one 12-year-old boy died and the FBI was called in, unearthing years of physical and sexual abuse at the hands of the Greens. The Lord Our Righteousness Church, led by Michael Travesser, who believed himself to be God incarnate, started out innocently enough, with the members believing in the end of the world and the impending apocalypse. But soon, Michael Travesser himself would be in a world of trouble, as allegations of the sexual abuse of minors plagued him. The end of the world was surely coming...if only just for him. Show Notes: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1277128/https://www.amazon.com/People-Magazine-Investigates-Cults-Season/dp/B07DHYXT51Thanks to our sponsor for this episode:HelpYouFind.Mewww.HelpYouFind.Me/newmexico10Smells Like HumansLike spending time with funny friends talking about curious human behavior.
