The spirit of joy that especially characterizes the second half of Advent arises from our awareness that the Lord is near. This is the spontaneous reaction of John the Baptist in the womb of his mother, Elizabeth, when Mary visited and greeted her. His natural facilities are not yet able to recognize joy, but his spirit is awakened to the presence of the Lord. This is how our soul responds in the presence of the Lord, whether we understand it or not.
