LISTEN | Morning Prayer - December 14, 2022 | Memorial of St. John of the Cross, Priest and Doctor of the Church "Where there is no love, put love - and you will find love." - St. John of the Cross
John of the Cross was born in Spain in 1542 of poor and simple parents, from whom he learned the importance of self-sacrificing love. At the age of fourteen, he took a job caring for hospital patients who suffered from incurable diseases. This experience led him to search for beauty and happiness in God alone. He entered and was ordained a priest in the Carmelite order and later, along with St. Teresa of Avila, began to reform the Order to its former life of prayer, which led to his imprisonment by his own brothers. Reduced to nothing by poverty and persecution, he experienced the intensity of divine love, which became the basis of the great mystical works he gave the Church, including Spiritual Canticle and Dark Night of the Soul. He died in 1591. St. John of the Cross, pray for us! Join the whole Christian community in in echoing our praise and thanksgiving to God for the gift of a new day through the ancient tradition of the Office of Lauds.
