This week on the Shaping Freedom Podcast with Lisane Basquiat, we are sitting down with Sharon Joseph, CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem. However, Sharon is so much more than just a leader. She is a mother, daughter, founder of the Harlem Lanes bowling club—a black and women-owned and led business—and breast cancer survivor. Today, we’re going to explore what it means to break the silence of suffering as a black woman.
There has been a pervasive myth circling our culture that women, especially black women, have to be strong, resilient, and often quiet about their struggles. Sharon’s mother went through it with her health struggles, and while facing Sharon’s own challenges, she knew her story had to be different. Throughout this episode, we’re going to learn how to accept the support we need, how to speak up when we are struggling, and how to keep laughing when life is putting us down.
