- International Women's Day. From demands for constitutional rights in Islamabad to calls for economic parity in Manila, Paris, and Madrid, International Women's Day demonstrations in cities around the world Wednesday highlighted the unfinished work of providing equity for half of the planet's population. United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres noted that women's rights were abused, threatened, and violated around the world, and gender equality won't be achieved for 300 years given the current pace of change.

- The World Health Organization has fired its top official in the Western Pacific after the Australian press reported last year that dozens of staff members accused him of racist, abusive, and unethical behavior that may have compromised the UN health agency's response to the corona pandemic.

- Tens of thousands of people marched in Paris and other cities across the France Wednesday to denounce the government's pension plan as unfair to female workers in demonstrations meant to coincide with International Women's Day.
