Valentina Tereshkova, callsign ‘Chaika’ (‘Seagull’), used to work as a dressmaker and a textile factory assembly worker. She walked away from the factory at 21 years of age to fulfill her dream of becoming Great Mother Russia’s ‘cosmonette’. A passionate skydiver, at 28 she started training as a cosmonaut.
