Description

On Saturday, November 13, 2010, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Simbonile Matokazi, a 33-year-old government employee, encountered an unfamiliar man standing on his doorstep. This occurrence immediately signaled that something was amiss. The man, who appeared to be of Indian descent unlike Matokazi and the majority of Khayelitsha's residents, was dressed in an expensive-looking dark suit with an open-collared shirt. He had been frantically knocking on doors along the sandy road, searching for help in the darkness. When Matokazi inquired about the reason for his distress, the man asked if there was a nearby police station where he could report a car hijacking.
