This is the remark of Nathanael or Bartholomew to the announcement of Philip, his friend, about what he had discovered, namely, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus was, according to Philip, the one their sacred scriptures had prophesied to come to save them. Can anything good come out of each of us? This is the discouraging challenge of the devil to each of us, who may be having a hard time in the spiritual life, of being consistent in our struggles in the ascetical fight, etc. Philip encouragingly invited Nathanael to "Come and see!" He went and met Jesus who revealed to him that He knew him in a way that convinced Nathanael that He was divine. Nathanael met the Messiah, the Savior! This was his way of surrendering himself to God, much like the doubting Thomas' " My Lord and my God," when he beheld the risen Lord before him.
