We read in the Gospel today about the introduction Jesus made about the institution of the Holy Eucharist. Previous to this, we read about the encounter between Jesus and Nicodemus. They had talked about the absolute need for the sacrament of Baptism for salvation. That was the first sacrament. Now, St. John tells us about the other necessary sacrament, and that is the Holy Eucharist. Its introduction is via the miraculous multiplication of the five loaves of bread and two fish. Five thousand men were satisfied. On top of that, they were able to gather 12 baskets full of leftovers. Jesus shows that He can feed His sheep, here with this common earthly food, and later, the Bread of Life that would lead to eternity.
