We are struck by the mystery of good and evil together in the world. There is a certain mixture of them in different degrees of proportion depending on the place and culture. Jesus explains in the Gospel today why this is so. Moreover, the good and evil are mixed not only outside of us, but also within us. There are elements of what is good and there, alas, is the presence of certain evil. Jesus enunciates the parable of the wheat and darnel. Wheat is planted by the farmers workers, but when they sleep, someone plants darnel seeds among the wheat. So, they see that both grow up together. The worker asks the master whether he wants them to remove the weeds. The master replies that that would not be a good idea because as they pull out the darnel, they might also remove the wheat. He decides to let them grow together, and only in harvest time will they separate the two plants. The weeds are bundled to be burned, while the wheat are gathered to be deposited in the barn.
