Jesus opens to us this ocean of God's mercy in the gospel today. What He wants from us is to acknowledge our sins and repent from them. He forgives. He is even convinced by a gardener to let a fig tree one more year to accommodate it to bear fruit. God is merciful! But He needs our repentance first.
