Today, we appreciate a number of things from the gospel on the wise men from the east bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh for the Lord in Bethlehem, the city of David. Bringing gifts or giving gifts to someone is significant. The one given is recognized for being someone. In this case, the gifts signify something of Jesus' identity. Gold signifies Jesus's being a king. In fact, He is an heir to the throne of David. Frankincense signifies Jesus' divinity, since this substance was burned to give forth a fragrance for the gods. Myrrh recognizes Jesus' humanity. This last one was used to anoint dead bodies. In fact, it was used on the corpse of Jesus before His burial.
