Description

On November 29th in sports history, one significant event took place in 1987 during a Monday Night Football game between the New York Giants and the San Francisco 49ers. The game, which was played at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, is often referred to as "The Earthquake Game."

During the fourth quarter, with the Giants leading 17-13, the 49ers were driving down the field in an attempt to take the lead. On a crucial third-down play, 49ers wide receiver Jerry Rice caught a pass from quarterback Joe Montana and was running towards the end zone when Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor made a diving tackle, causing Rice to fumble the ball.

The Giants recovered the fumble, securing their victory. However, the moment Taylor made the tackle, a seismic event occurred. The celebration of the Giants fans in the stands was so intense that it registered as an earthquake on a seismograph at Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory in Palisades, New York, about 15 miles away from the stadium.

The seismograph reading showed a small tremor lasting about 15 seconds, coinciding with the moment of Taylor's tackle. This event demonstrated the incredible passion and energy of the fans and has become a legendary moment in NFL history.

The Giants went on to win the Super Bowl that season, while the 49ers would bounce back to win the Super Bowl the following year. The "Earthquake Game" remains a testament to the power of sports to generate excitement and bring people together in ways that can even shake the earth.
