The Locked Room
Detective Sarah Jones stood outside the locked room, her heart pounding. Inside, the body of millionaire businessman, Robert Thompson, lay lifeless on the floor. The room had been locked from the inside, and there were no signs of forced entry.
As Sarah examined the scene, she noticed a few peculiar details. A half-empty glass of whiskey sat on the desk, next to a pen and a sheet of paper with a single line scribbled on it: "I'm sorry, I had no choice."
The only other person in the house at the time of the murder was Thompson's wife, Elizabeth. She claimed to have been in the garden when she heard a gunshot from inside the house. Running inside, she found the door to her husband's study locked. She called the police immediately.
Sarah interviewed Elizabeth, who seemed genuinely distraught. However, something about her story didn't quite add up. As Sarah dug deeper, she discovered that the couple had been having financial troubles, and Elizabeth stood to inherit a substantial life insurance payout.
The detective's instincts told her that Elizabeth was hiding something. She decided to take a closer look at the study. As she examined the window, she noticed a small hole in the glass, barely visible to the naked eye.
Suddenly, it all clicked into place. Sarah confronted Elizabeth with her theory: Elizabeth had hired a professional assassin to shoot her husband from outside the window. The assassin had used a specialized tool to unlock the window, fired the shot, and then locked the window again before fleeing the scene.
Elizabeth, realizing she had been caught, confessed to the crime. The mystery of the locked room had been solved, thanks to Detective Sarah Jones' keen eye for detail and unwavering determination to uncover the truth.
