The Locked Room Murder

Detective Sarah Pearson arrived at the crime scene, a luxurious penthouse apartment on the top floor of a high-rise building. The victim, a wealthy businessman named Robert Montgomery, had been found dead in his study, locked from the inside. The only key was still in the lock on the inside of the door.

As Sarah examined the room, she noticed the window was closed and latched, and there were no signs of forced entry. The victim had been shot once in the head, and the gun lay beside him on the floor. It appeared to be a clear-cut case of suicide.

However, Sarah's instincts told her otherwise. She noticed a few peculiar details: a half-empty glass of whiskey on the desk, a faint lipstick stain on the rim, and a small, unfamiliar key hidden beneath some papers.

Sarah questioned the building's security staff and learned that a woman had visited Montgomery shortly before his death. The description matched his ex-wife, Olivia. When confronted, Olivia admitted to meeting with Robert but claimed she left well before the time of death.

As Sarah dug deeper, she discovered that the small key belonged to a safety deposit box. Inside, she found a life insurance policy naming Olivia as the sole beneficiary. The policy had been taken out just weeks before Robert's death.

Putting the pieces together, Sarah realized that Olivia had conspired with the building's maintenance manager, who had access to a master key. Olivia had slipped a potent sedative into Robert's whiskey, and once he was unconscious, the maintenance manager unlocked the door, allowing Olivia to stage the suicide and lock the door behind her.

With the evidence Sarah had gathered, both Olivia and the maintenance manager were arrested for murder, proving once again that even the most seemingly impossible crimes can be solved with a keen eye for detail and a relentless pursuit of the truth.
