It is not uncommon today to see people complain of going through a lot. But what we don't often see or hear are same people who are grateful for the many things they survived. Survivals, oftentimes appear to be the least grateful for how far God has helped them, for the trauma and ordeals they survived. Their scars mean less to them than it does to people who stood by and watched them go through such big turbulence. Rather than being thankful, we may find them making very unhealthy and disproportionate comparison.
Elijah fell into this error of judgment when he complained to God of being His only surviving prophet and the wicked Queen Jezebel was after his life. Unbeknownst to him, God had 7000 prophets who nobody knew existed. The wisdom and knowledge of God confounded his limited knowledge. This is the same challenge and error we face daily when we measure successes or failures by our own standards and senses. The sense organs of sight, hearing, taste touch, smell, are inappropriate medium to judge God's standards. Popularity or obscurity isn't a precise measurement of impact.
Hence, our text opens with soul-searching questions, all of which would have very negative answers. Who can wrap their mind around God's riches or the depth of His wisdom? Or the perfection of God's knowledge? Who could ever explain the wonder of his decisions or search out the mysterious way he carries out his plans? Being unable to answer these questions should compel us to submit completely to His Lordship, knowing we're incomparable to the depth of wisdom that comes from God. How unsearchable are His judgment and His ways past finding out! Glory to God!!
