Nothing beats the devil silly like a man with an unbroken spirit. The more you throw at him, the more he comes back bouncing after every fall or setback. Anyone with an unbroken spirit can brace any storm; they've a resilience that literally feeds on storm until they weather it. David had just returned from war to see his city overrun by the enemy and all their wives had be kidnapped, property plundered and carted away. Then his men turned against him immediately and wanted to stone him to death.
The natural thing to do was to grieve and be consumed in despair, but not so with David. He encouraged himself in the Lord, drew strength from him and sought direction how to go about events. That's an unbroken man, he can take a licking and still be ticking. To have an unbroken spirit is to have a fighting spirit that's not detered by what's thrown at them. You're troubled on every side but won't be distressed; despair has nothing on you. Persecution fuels your resolve and leaves you indestructible.
God is equipping men to run the devil out of his game. Every attacking scheme in his playbook or trick he deploys can't keep this new breed down. They're not ignorant of his devices, but importantly, they possess this toughness baked out of the furnace of the Holy Spirit so that the enemy's fire can look like an air-conditioned room. They'll defy all odds to get to their destination.
