Of all the great food cultures I’ve been interested in, Italy is easily in the top three. Who among us Americans hasn’t had spaghetti, lasagna, or pizza? Whether we realize it or not, Italian food makes its way into our lives. When I got the invitation to visit Castello di Albola, I jumped on the offer. Thanks to a story I wrote about the 1804 Inn at Barboursville Vineyards, Luca Pascina passed the story on to Zonin Wine Company, the owners of Barboursville Vineyards. My wife and I had dreamed of visiting Tuscany and now we had the chance. We planned to visit in November to arrive in truffle season and have fewer tourists crowding the popular cities of Florence and Siena. I would have several months to plan the trip and get help from unlikely sources along the way.
