Word on the streets of Dallas-Fort Worth is that our region's sprawling development might be keeping our housing costs down. According to a new report from the George W. Bush Institute, DFW's less restrictive housing policies have helped make our homes and apartments more affordable than equally in-demand coastal cities like San Francisco. By staying ahead of population growth, Sun Belt cities like ours have kept housing prices about 10% cheaper than they otherwise would be. The report estimates that if every large U.S. metro had similar housing policies to DFW, about 5.6 million additional homes would have been built nationwide from 2010 to 2023, potentially lowering average home prices by $115,000 and monthly rents by $450.
In transportation news, American Airlines and DFW Airport have announced they're doubling the size of the new Terminal F expansion. This significant change to their original plans will substantially increase capacity at what is already one of the busiest airports in the world.
