Levi (Miles Teller) and Drasa (Anya Taylor-Joy) are highly skilled snipers representing different global powers, tasked with the protection of a significant gorge located in an undisclosed nation. Derrickson and screenwriter Zach Dean would have benefited from immersing the audience directly into the action of their mission, as the film's opening segment, "The Gorge," is notably its weakest. This initial portion provides unnecessary backstory for Levi and Drasa, which detracts from the narrative. The inherent charisma of the two leads is sufficient for viewers to care about their fates without needing to delve into Levi’s PTSD or Drasa’s ailing father prior to their introduction. This approach does allow Derrickson to feature Sigourney Weaver in a minor role as Levi’s superior, yet it squanders the talent of Sope Dirisu, who is relegated to a role primarily focused on exposition as Levi’s predecessor.
