Description

Description: The episode is focused on Dr. Branch lived experiences as a Black man in America and celebrating Black History Month.  Dr. Branch shares a personal story about being mistaken for not being a professor at a university where he was teaching, due to assumptions made about him based on his race. Dr. Branch discusses how people often make assumptions and "tell you who you are" based on stereotypes and preconceptions, rather than seeing the person for who they truly are. The experience the host describes was very hurtful and crushed his soul, as he had worked hard to achieve his qualifications and position, only to still be judged and not recognized. The episode explores the layers of Dr. Branch’s identity - who he was, who he is, and who he is becoming - particularly in relation to being a Black man. Dr. Branch emphasizes the importance of recognizing Black people for who they are, not just based on assumptions or labels.
Lifework:

  1. Challenge yourself to see people as individuals, not just based on stereotypes or assumptions about their race or background. Make an effort to truly understand who someone is, not just who you think they are.
  2. Recognize the ongoing impact of racism and microaggressions, even for successful and accomplished Black and underrepresented individuals. Don't assume that achievements or status make someone immune to unfair treatment.
  3. Reflect on how you might be contributing to the problem of labeling or making assumptions about others. Be honest with yourself about any biases or preconceptions you may hold.
  4. Seek out and immerse yourself in content, music, food, and other elements of different cultures and history to gain a deeper appreciation and understanding. Allow these things to uplift and empower you.
  5. Become more aware, empathetic and proactive in confronting the realities of racism, rather than ignoring or dismissing them. Dr. Branch encourages listeners to do this work on both a personal and societal level.
