Description

Description:
Dr. Branch interviews Mr. Lewis Johnson, a licensed professional counselor in private practice in the State of Pennsylvania, discusses his personal and professional journey, including how he has grown in embracing his identity as a Black, gay man and the challenges he has faced in the predominantly white field of counseling. Lewis shares a powerful story about an incident of racism he experienced at a professional workshop, where he was deeply impacted by an insensitive role-playing exercise. He describes how he processed this experience and took steps to nourish and affirm his own identity.  Lewis talks about his decision to adopt a child as a single man, and the lessons he has learned in that process. He offers advice to the listeners about the importance of pausing and being present.
Lifework:

  1. Create your own "Black Box" - Identify cultures, communities, resources, practices, and spaces that help nourish and affirm your identity, whether that's music, books, local businesses, or places of community. Intentionally engage with a box of armor when you need to revitalize yourself.
  2. Practice pausing and being present - Make a conscious effort to pause, tune into your senses, and simply be in the moment, without rushing or overthinking. Notice the small joys and details you may have overlooked before.
  3. Reflect on your own journey of growth and self-discovery - Consider how your perspectives and sense of self have evolved over time. What pivotal moments or experiences have shaped who you are today? How can you continue to cultivate self-awareness and authenticity?
  4. Seek out mentors and build supportive communities - Follow Louis' example and find professionals or peers who can provide guidance, encouragement, and a sense of belonging, especially if you are navigating predominantly white or otherwise challenging spaces.
