Worked restoring baroque castles, then in radio for the Czech communist gov't. That ended when the Soviets occupied the country and took over the station. Realizing it was a hopeless situation, the family left Czechoslovakia, settling in the U.S. in 1969 Jaroslaw Martyniuk was born in Ukraine. He had relatives who were imprisoned in Soviet gulags. His family fled communism at the end of World War II and he eventually ended up in Chicago.
