On this week's episode of True Crime New England, Katie and Liz talk about a hate crime that took place in Bangor, Maine. It was a warm night on August 4th, 1984 when 23-year-old Charlie Howard was walking home from a church event with his boyfriend, Roy Ogden. While crossing the Kenduskeag River Bridge, a car full of teenagers pulls up and begins to harass and give chase to the two men. Charlie, unfortunately, suffers from severe asthma and is unable to run very far, which allows the teenage boys easy access to kick and beat up Charlie. Eventually, the three boys hoist Charlie up onto the guardrail while he pleads for his life, unable to catch his breath, and they push him over and into the Kenduskeag River. It was 3 hours later that Charlie's body was found, and the next morning the boys are arrested. To this day, Bangor celebrates Charlie's life and pushes for a hate-free community.
