A group of young frogs disobeys their Grandfather Frog’s warning to stay home and venture out of their pond to explore the valley. Lured by what they believe to be a gathering of fireflies for them to feast on, they stumble upon a fairies' party. Offended by their intrusion and intent to eat their lantern-bearers, the Fairy Queen punishes the frogs by taking away one toe from each of their front paws. She then drives them back to their pond. The story explains why frogs have fewer toes on their front paws than their hind legs.
